CNHS Designated as a 2020 - 2021 Gold Star No Place For Hate® School
Colts Neck High School was recently named a 2020 - 2021 Gold Star No Place For Hate® School by the Anti-Defamation League.
In order to achieve No Place for Hate status, schools first have to publicize and have students sign the No Place for Hate Pledge. In addition, activities to promote an inclusive environment must be offered for students. Colts Neck High School’s activities included:
- Week of Respect: Students engaged in lessons discussing the meaning of respect and practical ways to demonstrate it to others. These activities included creating a respect website, a video montage about respect from our Peer Leaders, and department-wide respect activities.
- The Power of Gratitude: Students and staff wrote thank you letters to other staff and students. Students and staff then engaged in discussions to describe the impact of how both the writing and receiving of such letters affected them and had a positive effect on the school culture and community.
- Peer Leadership Respect Program: Students engaged in lessons with Peer Leaders about respect, empathy, and compassion. The students participated in discussions about acceptance versus tolerance, respect, empathy, and sportsmanship. They worked through scenarios in groups to discuss best practices to use when they find themselves in potentially challenging situations.
- One Word: Through poetry and literature, students unpacked the power of words and how even one word can make a difference in effectively communicating a message. Students were able to share what they learned about word choice and how to avoid inadvertently making choices that could be upsetting to others.
