May 11 - COVID-19 Update to the Community
May 11, 2020
Dear FRHSD Community,
On May 4, 2020, Governor Murphy announced that schools would remain closed for in-person instruction for the duration of the 2019-2020 school year in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. As students continue to engage in remote learning through the end of the 2019-2020 school year, please note the following updates to the end of year processes and plans for graduation.
While FRHSD was planning a modified version of an in-person graduation ceremony during the month of June, we are beholden to Governor Murphy’s Executive Order 107. As per the New Jersey Department of Education Memorandum issued on May 8, 2020, “Executive Order No. 107, signed on March 21, 2020, prohibits gatherings of individuals for parties, celebrations, and other social events, which includes all in-person graduation ceremonies. Since the Executive Orders will remain in effect until further notice, only virtual graduation ceremonies can be planned at this time.” Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, State Director of Emergency Management, has also issued directions reiterating that graduation ceremonies may only be held virtually and that “wave parades” are prohibited. In celebration of the Class of 2020, the district will conduct virtual graduation ceremonies on Wednesday, June 24. More information regarding the virtual graduation ceremony will be communicated by the building principal. We recognize the importance of celebrating the Class of 2020 and we will be attempting to schedule in-person graduation ceremonies during the week of July 27. Any in-person graduation ceremony will follow all appropriate protocols as outlined by the Governor’s Executive Order regarding social distancing and allowable public gatherings. Seniors will receive subsequent communication from their respective principal regarding cap and gown and diploma distribution shortly.
Additionally, as we look to coordinate closeout procedures for the end of the school year, families will receive detailed communications from the building principal regarding personal item pick-up (locker items) and school property items drop-off (textbooks, electronic devices, Chromebooks, instruments, uniforms, library books, etc.). Seniors will receive information from their building principal for the pick-up and drop-off processes which will occur the week of June 15. Underclassmen will be notified with a date in the summer to pick-up and drop-off items.
Students will not take final examinations for the 2019-2020 school year. Remote Learning will not take place on Monday, May 25, in observance for Memorial Day.
We share in your disappointment that the end-of-year events and graduation ceremonies can not take place in the traditional manner at this time. We will continue to engage our students remotely and celebrate their many successes while maintaining everyone’s health and safety first. Thank you for your continued partnership and flexibility during this challenging time for our students.
We are here for you.
