5 Credits, Grade 9
Agribiology will explain the scientific principles behind food, fiber, and natural resource systems. The course will follow the same format as Laboratory Biology, with units covering: lab safety, cell processes, genetics, evolution, classification, and ecology. Labs, readings, discussions, and projects will help guide students in their studies. FFA and SAE will also be a part of the course, enabling students to develop career skills and participate in Career Development Events such as the Agricultural Essay, 3‐5 Minute Speech, Creed Speaking, Environmental and Natural Resources CDE and other state and national contests. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to take the New Jersey Biology Completer Exam. They will also be prepared to make a well-informed decision about many of the career opportunities in plant, animal, food and environmental sciences.
5 Credits, Grade 10
Students engage in inquiry-based activities and projects in animal anatomy and behavior, as well as selection and marketing of products and services. The laboratory skills, field skills, thought processes, and communication techniques practiced are the fundamentals used by veterinarians, zoologists, livestock producers, and other animal science industry members and leaders. Throughout the year students will be challenged to consider perceptions and preferences of individuals within local, regional, and world markets about costs, ethics, and environmental concerns. Animal Science will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the industry so they may go on to post-secondary study in animal science and medicine, biology, and agricultural production, processing, and marketing.
FLORAL LANDSCAPE AND DESIGN
5 Credits, Grade 10
The course presents the fundamental principles of horticulture with a focus on ornamental horticulture. Career exploration, safety, and technical skills make up the backbone of the course and spiral through subsequent units. Floral design, landscape design, greenhouse and nursery production, pest management, and supervised learning experiences are the more nuanced and focused units that are introduced and explored. Use of the greenhouse and classroom laboratory facilities allows students genuine hands-on learning experiences that reinforce classroom instruction.
HONORS AGRICULTURAL LEADERSHIP
5 Credits, Grade 11
The Honors Agricultural Leadership I course introduces students to leadership through topics such as: personal and team development, parliamentary procedure, event planning, job interviewing, public speaking and community service. Students have the opportunity to serve leadership roles such as FFA Chapter Officers, Greenhouse/Floral Sale Managers, and chairperson of a community service event. Students also participate individually and as part of a team in the New Jersey FFA Career Development Events (CDE). Students are assessed through group discussions/participation, committee reports, news articles, readings, projects, tests and state CDE exams.
HONORS AGRICULTURAL LEADERSHIP II
5 Credits, Grade 12
Honors Agricultural II is the culminating class of the four-year Animal and Botanical Science Academy program. Students have worked on developing their leadership skills throughout the four-year program, and are now ready to plan for their future career paths. The three components of Agricultural Education, including: Classroom Instruction, FFA and Supervised Agricultural Experience are addressed throughout this course. Students continue to expand upon their SAE project in one or more SAE categories: Placement, Entrepreneurship, Exploratory or Research, and have the opportunity to apply for the National FFA Proficiency Award program. FFA is an integral part of the curriculum, offering all students opportunities to hold officer positions, become active chapter members, plan events, attend state leadership conferences, compete in state and national Career Development Events and apply for degrees and scholarships. Classroom instruction will include: event planning, agricultural marketing, and sales, customer service, community service. Guest speakers will be invited to enhance the curriculum. Units on local, national and global agriculture will help provide a solid foundation of knowledge of agriculture and environmental issues. Students will take an industry approved Completer Exam upon completion of the course.
