    HONORS LITERATURE AND ARTS STUDIES I  
    5 Credits, Grade 9
    Students in Literature and Arts Studies I will in six units of study read, discuss, write, and present in a variety of genres. Students will maintain the integrity of the core texts they read by not reading parallel or partial versions of texts, or compromising the integrity of the original work in any other way. Students will be expected to effectively work independently and cooperatively without significant prompting as students need to be clearly defined as maintaining a self-motivated work ethic. Students will be expected to participate fully in class discussion and activities. Emphasis in Literature and Arts Studies I is on the fine and performing arts in terms of projects and public speaking skills. Students receive their writing emphasis in Process Skills I where the literature from both courses are linked through writing assignments. These Writing Links appear in bold print in five of the six unit descriptions. These are to be completed in the Process Skills Course, but reflect thematic ideas discussed in both Process Skills I and Literature and Arts I. CODE # 201250

    HONORS WORLD CULTURES 
    5 Credits, Grade 9
    World Cultures is an honors level course for freshmen dealing with the historical and cultural foundations of civilization. Students will be engaged in various activities designed to display the link between the past and present. Activities are designed to challenge students to go beyond the text and discern important concepts of themes within each unit. Students can expect to participate in the following activities: oral presentations, written examinations, debates, role playing, technology‐based projects, historical film studies, educational excursions, cultural festivals, infomercials, and web quests.     PROCESS SKILLS I  
    5 Credits, Grade 9
    Students in Process Skills I will read and write in a variety of genres. Emphasis in individual writing assignments will be on research and literary analysis, with a number of writing assignments directly linked to literary works that students will be studying in their Literature Arts I course. These Literature Arts I Writing Links appear in bold print in five of the six unit descriptions. In addition to individual assignments, students will work on a number of cooperative learning, student-centered assignments involving writing, research and oral presentations, as well as have the opportunity to write creatively in an extensive culminating Creative Writing Portfolio. It should also be noted that during all six units throughout the school year, there will be instruction in grammar and punctuation, as well preparation for such standardized tests as the HSPA, PSAT & SAT.     HONORS LITERATURE AND ARTS STUDIES II  
    5 Credits, Grade 10
    This is a one year, five credit, honors level course which meets all NJCCCS for English and satisfies one year of the NJ state requirements for four years of English. It is a literature and arts studies class for 10th grade student of the Scholars’ Center for the Humanities. Besides developing specific research, writing, and literary criticism skills, the course will introduce the students to a wide variety of European and American literature. The course parallels the United States Cultures class as well as the Process Skills II class. This allows for an interdisciplinary approach applied to the learning process for students.     HONORS US HISTORY AND CULTURE  
    5 Credits, Grade 10
    In this course an emphasis is placed on strong mode of inquiry, critical examination of primary source documents, including art and literature, to examine history, as well as the study of how other cultures, including Native American, African, European, Asian and Caribbean have contributed to the American identity. Emphasis also is placed on writing and technology skills through the incorporation of a position paper, an annotated bibliography project and writing portfolio to showcase students’ best‐written works and an interdisciplinary approach with the Process Skills II technology course.     HONORS PROCESS SKILLS II  
    5 Credits, Grade 10
    This is a one‐year, five credit, honors level course for Humanities Learning Center students in grade 10. The course will establish an understanding for the use and application of the Microsoft Office Suite advanced features in addition to addition to Web Design, Desktop Publishing and the Internet. The students will learn common features among various Office components as well as those unique to Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Front Page, and Publisher.

    HONORS MODERN ART IN AMERICA  
    5 Credits, Grade 11
    Honors Modern Art in America will explore modern art through societal norms and cultural influences. Students will be introduced to historical texts, videos, and images relevant to modern art history and use these to develop their understanding and application of their learning. The course fulfills the Fine & Performing Art graduation requirement and can encourage prospective learning in other areas of art or art history. In addition, it requires creation of original artworks inspired by historical works of art, artists, and/or concepts learned. Artistic techniques, art theories, and art criticism are also included. Traditional art making materials will be used as well as other contemporary and/or digital media in projects and presentations. CODE # 202850

    ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION  
    5 Credits, Grade 12
    The Advanced Placement Language and Composition course requires students to develop skills in the modes of discourse which include narration, description, comparison and contrast, exposition, and argument. These skills form the basis of most college level writing courses; students may satisfy these requirements by successfully completing the AP examination given each May. To that end, in a variety of fiction and non‐fiction works from late nineteenth to mid twentieth century, students in the Literature and Arts III Advanced Placement class participate in activities requiring close reading and insightful analysis, such as Socratic seminars, rhetorical strategies analysis, research, timed writing, debate, and other formal presentations. Assessment of these activities is accomplished through established rubrics including those provided by AP Central. CODE # 202250

    ADVANCED PLACEMENT US HISTORY  
    5 Credits, Grade 11
    US Cultures II AP is an Advanced Placement course designed to continue the work of US Cultures I AP and prepare its students for the Advance Placement exam in American History all while keeping in spirit with the philosophies of the Freehold Regional High School District Scholars‘ Center for the Humanities Learning Center. The scope of the course ranges from the end of reconstruction through post September 11th America and the war on terror. In the instruction of this class, special consideration should be given to examining history in light of contemporary policy. Examining this period in American history from a historical, economic, and social point of view is essential to effective understanding. CODE # 202450

    ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH LITERATURE  
    5 Credits, Grade 12
    This course engages students in the reading and critical analysis of selected literary texts. Structure, style, and themes will be explored. Students will write analytical essays under timed test-taking conditions that integrate their abilities to recognize syntax, diction, tone, and figurative language. CODE # 010455

    HONORS MODERN AMERICAN CULTURES  
    5 Credits, Grade 12
    In order to carry out this philosophy, students taking the Modern American Cultures course will take part in a variety of tasks. Students will research, analyze, and discuss collaboratively in a student- centered classroom the different cultures that create American society. Students will write papers and give oral presentations on key issues and prominent figures that have shaped our society. Cooperative group work, visual presentations, and interactive activities such as mock trials and elections will be used to enhance the students learning experience. To help teach one another about the concepts brought forth throughout the course, stimulating debates will be held on a variety of issues. Active participation in the course will be necessary for students to gain a full understanding of the concepts related to modern culture. CODE # 203250

    HONORS TOPICS IN PHILOSOPHY        
    5 Credits, Grade 12
    In order to carry out this philosophy, students will take part in a variety of tasks. The senior-level Humanities students are expected to read, evaluate, and debate the ideologies of key philosophers, including Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Rousseau, Marx and Sartre. Students will answer essential philosophical questions such as who are you, where does the world come from, as well as debate the nature of existence. Once exposed to philosophical questioning and basic information about the origins of philosophy, students will respond to key ideas through oral presentation, discussion, and critical essays. Cooperative group work, visual presentations, and interactive activities such as puppet shows, marketing presentations, and in class debates will be used to allow students to work together to facilitate the internalization of the concepts explored in the course. Students must then apply these critical thinking skills to topical units on political philosophy, ethical philosophy, aesthetics, music, as well as in the implementation of their Senior Legacy Project. Active participation in the course is necessary for students to gain a full understanding of the concepts related to philosophy. CODE # 203350
