Two Cadets from CNHS NJROTC Accepted to U.S. Naval Academy Seminar
Colts Neck High School has two cadets from the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) Academy who were accepted into the United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar. Juniors Evan Hymanson and Kristen Schandall will spend a week in Annapolis, MD.
The United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar is a fast-paced, six-day experience for high achievers who have completed their junior year in high school. Summer Seminar teaches the students about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics, and professional training play equally important roles in developing our nation's leaders, according to the program’s website.
Major Gregory J. Penczak, USMC (Ret), Senior Naval Science Instructor at Colts Neck, said both cadets hope to attend the United States Naval Academy after graduation and look forward to serving our nation as Naval Officers.
Freehold Regional High School District’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) Academy is a four-year leadership and character development program. The mission of the overall Navy Junior ROTC Program is to instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. The mission of the Colts Neck High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) is to instill in our student cadets our core values of honor, courage, and commitment, and the values of citizenship and service to our community upon which they can individually build a foundation of trust and leadership that will be recognized as the hallmark of our unit. The vision of the NJROTC Instructors is to build cadet’s individual self-confidence and leadership abilities to enable them to succeed and excel, individually and collectively.
The Navy Junior ROTC Academy’s curriculum consists of four areas of study: leadership, academics, military skills, and physical fitness. Leadership studies emphasize individual character development through increased self-discipline, dependability and teamwork. NJROTC Academics cover naval sciences and how the US Navy has, and continues to impact our nation’s history and security. Military skills’ training includes building teamwork through drill and ceremonies, an understanding of military customs and courtesies, and extracurricular activities. Physical fitness requires daily attendance at physical training sessions conducted by NJROTC Instructors.
CNHS NJROTC cadets achieve their educational objectives by working within the framework of a military style organization that offers them opportunities for travel to interesting destinations, as well as participation in unique extracurricular activities and numerous community service events. Individual cadets are encouraged to seek and attain promotions to military ranks that will enable them to achieve the levels of individual responsibilities they desire. The program at Colts Neck High School holds distinguished unit status and may directly recommend students to the military service academies.
