FRHSD Students Take Home Awards in Science Competitions
On March 19th, students from around New Jersey presented their research posters to a group of judges at the Monmouth Junior Science Symposium. The primary goal of the Monmouth Junior Science Symposium is to promote research and experimentation in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics at the high school level, and to publicly recognize students for outstanding achievement. The two-day event includes presentations from New Jersey high school students on their individual science research projects.
Freehold High School (FHS) senior Ellen Wu was the first place poster winner for her Medical Science independent research project titled, “The Role of Cypin in Regulating H9c2 Myoblast Cell Body Size.”
Another portion of the competition included the General Poster Session, where four Freehold Regional High School District students took home honors.
FHS junior Victoria Liu placed second in the math and computer category for her project, “The Correlation Between Tweets and Motor Vehicle Accidents.”
Freehold Regional High School District students swept the medical and health category, securing all three top spots. FHS junior Ila Sethi placed first in the category for her poster, “The Effect of Glucocorticoids on IFNg-induced STAT-1 Serine Phosphorylation.” Ila also won first place at the Jersey Shore Science Fair on March 21st for the same project and will be moving on to regional competition at Delaware Valley.
Manalapan High School freshman Aheli Chatterjee placed second in the medical and health category for her project, “A Strategy to Correct Autistic-like Symptoms in a Mouse Model of Fragile X Syndrome.”
FHS senior Ruchita Kothari placed third in the medical and health category for her project “Insulin Resistance and Effects of IDE and Curcumin on Beta Amyloid Plaques in a C.elegans Model of Alzheimer’s Disease.”
The four FHS students are all enrolled in the Freehold Regional High School District’s Medical Sciences Specialized Learning Center.
The Medical Sciences Specialized Learning Center at Freehold High School offers a comprehensive and rigorous schedule of mathematics and science as well as a thorough preparation for postsecondary work to high-achieving, self-motivated students interested in medical and natural science. Students work and study in a creative environment enhanced by contact with specialists in the mathematics, science, and health-care fields. Opportunities exist for articulation with medical and research facilities. Personal and career counseling with field experiences prepares each student for college and career selection. The program affiliates with colleges, universities, research centers, CentraState Medical Center, and private practitioners. Seniors take part in an externship at CentraState Medical Center where they will observe different aspects of the field including family practice, pharmacology, and surgery.
