SOPHOMORE and JUNIOR PSAT / NMSQT REGISTRATION

The PSAT/NMSQT is a junior test.  However, if you would like your child to be tested on this date, print and fill out the form below.  This test measures skills that are important for success in college -- verbal reasoning, math problem-solving and writing.  Taking the PSAT / NMSQT enables students to:

  1. practice for the SAT Program Tests
  2. seek information from colleges
  3. get feedback about critical academic skills
  4. enter scholarship competitions

Each year, students who take the PSAT/NMSQT during the proper year in high school (usually the junior year) and meet other established requirements enter NMSC competitions for recognition and college scholarships.  The PSAT/NMSQT Student Bulletin will include a description of NMSC programs and scholarships to be offered in 2010.

PSAT TEST DATE:  October 17, 2009

PLACE:  Howell High School

TOTAL TESTING TIME:  2 hours and 45 minutes

FEE:  $25.00 per student (CASH ONLY) to be paid before and after school ONLY in the Guidance Office. Registration will be accepted from September 17 to October 9th only.  Test registration will not be extended.  Registration is on a first come, first served basis.  Please bring the EXACT amount of cash.

TEST DAY:  Students must report to school by 8:15 am and will be dismissed between 11:30 and 11:45 AM.  Due to testing security, only students taking the test will be permitted in the building during these times.  Parents should wait outside for students.

'If the law is of such a nature that it requires you to be an agent of injustice to another then I say, break the law.'  Henry David
Thoreau

Henry David Thoreau penned theses timeless words in his Civil Disobedience.  A man of action, he not only said it but he lived it.  Thoreau refused to pay his taxes to the government while it was engaged in the Mexican War because he condemned the war as unjust.  For his courageous and unprecedented act of protest, he was thrown in jail.  Over the last 150 years, his act of Civil Disobediece has worldwide repercussions.  Ghandi based his passive resistance campaign on Thoreau's words.  Dr. Martin Luther King and the non violent protests of The Civil Rights Movement ring with the philosophies of Thoreau.  The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail is a timeless work about a timeless man and the music which still radiates from his words.  (paraphrased from Bantam Books, 1972)
