We are sadly all aware of the school shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. It seems highly likely that over 20 people have been killed, many of them elementary-aged school children--an unconscionable action and apparently the work of an individual gunman.

We recognize that our schools are one community, that we need to remain vigilant and aware that these types of actions occur, and that we must take aggressive and proactive steps to keep our buildings safe. District principals will be reviewing all safety protocols and measures with their faculty and staff in the coming days. We will continue to routinely and regularly practice a number of drills to provide an environment for our students and staff that is as safe as possible. We will continue to regularly review the security of our physical structures--our doors, exits and all exterior entrances to our buildings.

Tragically, the events in Newtown this afternoon remind us to always approach all of our safety and emergency preparedness drills with the utmost sense of purpose. While we cannot eliminate unimaginable acts of violence, we can seek to strengthen our capacity to prepare for the unforeseen within our schools. Additionally, we are working closely with our local authorities to ensure that our crisis and emergency plans are reflective of the most recent recommendations from law enforcement and emergency preparedness organizations. We will continue with this work during this difficult time.

Please give pause to think about those children and adults in Connecticut.
